Frequently Asked Questions

What is Essentrics? I've heard it is like yoga/Tai Chi/Ballet, which is it?

Well....none of them. :) Yes, there will be moments where your body will move slowly and gracefully, but Essentrics is a whole other exercise unto itself. There are no "poses" that are held, it is not a marital art/meditation exercise and it is not a style of dance.  You should however, feel more more mentally relaxed and looser in your joints and muscles each time you leave.

What should I wear?

The most important thing is to be comfortable. Basic yoga or workout pants are great bottoms for practice. On the top half, a more fitted top is preferable. It makes it easier for both you and me to really see what your torso is doing.  For dance classes, if you have a coin or fringe hip scarf, feel free to bring it as well. Don't have one? Click the Shopping Spree box on the home page for links to some fun jinglies.

Can I do drop-in classes or do I have to sign up for the whole session?

Unfortunately, drop-ins are not available at this time but if you know your your schedule will be irregular, private/semi-private lessons may be a good option for you. See the Lessons tab for more information.

How long until I start seeing results in my body?

Just like every workout, the more you practice (yes, there is  occasional homework), the faster you will see results. Since every body is different, results will vary between each person. However, most people can feel/see a change in their body after regularly attending 2-3 sessions.

Childcare is an issue right now, can i bring my little one to sit quietly in/outside class?

If the location has on-site childcare (you are responsible for fees) or a community space that is ACTIVELY being attended by an employee other than myself (i.e at a rec center), absolutely! However, if neither is available, only registered participants are allowed in the class space/studio due to insurance liability requirements. No exceptions.

Can I bring my husband/child/a friend to watch?

While a spouse, child or friend can be a fun source of encouragement for you, they can also be a source of jitters for others. In order to continue to create a feeling of a "safe place" for everyone enrolled and because of facility liability concerns, only current students are allowed in the studio/fitness room while class is running.  Friends and family are more than welcome to come to performances/events to cheer you on and many of the workshops and events are family-friendly as well.

I've never taken a bellydance class before.  Is this something I can really do?

Absolutely! This class is not just about learning a new style of dance, it's about re-learning you. Not everyone has visions of dancing on a huge stage but a new sense of confidence can still be found no matter what your experience, ability, age or size. Take a chance and have some fun at the same time!

Are performance options available for bellydance? Are they mandatory?

Student shows are always an option for Level 1 students and never a requirement of the class. Level 2 also has the option of student shows however, regular class attendance is a factor in whether you will be able to participate in performances outside of student shows.
